Kabul:

At least 15 Afghans were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that took place in an open area where thousands of Afghans had gathered on Tuesday to obtain visas at the Pakistani consulate in the east Afghanistan, officials said on Wednesday.

Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the provincial council in the eastern city of Jalalabad, where the incident occurred, said of the 15 people who died, 11 were women and several elderly people were injured.

Two other provincial officials said more than 3,000 Afghans had gathered to collect the tokens needed to apply for a visa to travel to Pakistan.
