The national coronavirus case count exceeded 1.45 lakh after 6,535 people tested positive for fatal virus infection in the past 24 hours. The total number of cases in the country was 1,45,380, including 4,167 deaths, according to data from the Union’s Ministry of Health. While hard-hit Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Delhi continued to report a large number of positive cases, states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Jharkhand seen their COVID-19 cases increase. The increase in the number of cases in India comes against a backdrop of slackening on the part of the government, two months after the announcement of a foreclosure of the country by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The country’s recovery rate – the number of patients who have successfully battled the disease – was 41.60% this morning. 60,491 people have recovered, the Ministry of Health said.

India is the tenth country most affected by the pandemic after the United States, Brazil, Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France and Germany. The United States – the epicenter of the pandemic – has recorded more than 1.6 million cases and nearly 1,000,000 deaths related to COVID-19.

In Tamil Nadu, the state with the highest number of cases of coronavirus after Maharashtra, the capital Chennai, shows a daily peak in the number of cases. The Southern State has reported 805 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 17,082.

Nagaland reported its first three cases on Monday after two men and a woman – all in their 20s who recently returned from Chennai to the state on a special train – were found to be infected with the new coronavirus. The first case of COVID-19 in India was detected in late January, but Nagaland has so far been free.

The limited number of domestic air trips resumed across the country Monday in disarray, with some states having limited the number of flights a few hours before departure, causing last minute cancellations and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Maharashtra, which has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country, said it would allow 25 flights to Mumbai and 25 flights from Mumabi. State government announced rules for passengers traveling in the Mumbai airports.

The Himachal Pradesh government has made arrangements to extend the lockdown in parts of the state for an additional five weeks. An order from the BJP government, led by Jai Ram Thakur, allowed all districts to extend the lockdown until June 30 if necessary. The final appeal belongs to the district administration. For the moment, it has been extended to Hamirpur and Solan.

The World Health Organization announced Monday that it has temporarily suspended clinical trials of hydroxychloriquine as a potential treatment for COVID-19, which are being carried out as a preventive measure in various countries.

Amidst the growing cases of COVID-19 in India, China has offered to repatriate its citizens from India who wish to return home. On Monday, a notice in Mandarin was published on the website of the Chinese Embassy, asking those who wish to return home to book tickets for special flights at their expense.

A national lockout has been in place since March 25, initially imposed for 21 days, but it has already been extended three times and the fourth phase in progress should continue until May 31.
